Chennai’s football scene has been steadily rising but alas, there are not many open spaces in the city for practicing and playing matches.  If you think of areas like Velachery, Guindy or Saidapet, there are hardly any parks to play a decent game of football. But all this is set to change. On the Velachery Main Road, right near the check-post a new football turf is now open for enthusiasts.  The newly-opened Turf 137 is city’s first five-a-side open arena and a non-caged football ground. The FIFA-approved turf has been launched by TRK Global headed by entrepreneur and businessman Thirukumaran Roopkumar. It has been imported from Amsterdam.

If you are thinking that it is meant for professional players alone, rest assured. The place intends to cater to any and everybody with the love of the game. On the weekend, we witnessed a motley group of players aged 11 to 20 playing a match at Turf 137. The 85 by 60 ft turf is set in a green space with a lot of trees and is almost like a green oasis amidst the congested Velachery Main Road.

Instead of the usual cement layer, topped by a layer of grass, the turf has been dug one-and-a-half ft below the ground to work on different layers so that the turf can better absorb shock and minimise injuries. It intends to encourage amateur players to develop their skills as well.

On weekdays, one has to pay Rs 2000 for morning slot, Rs 1500 for noon slot and Rs 2500 for evening slot. On weekends, the prices across the slots increase by Rs 500.
