There are days when all you want is to have your favourite decadent dessert and if you are a desi at heart, kulfi has to top your list. While Chennai has never really been known for its kulfi places unlike Delhi and Mumbai, the city saw an avalanche of kulfi houses last year. We pick five places that serve delicious kulfi in the city

Bombay Kulfi

They set shop first in Adyar and soon owing to growing popularity they had a store in Anna Nagar. It is originally from Coimbatore. Over weekends if you go to their outlets, you will have to brave large crowds. They serve a large variety of kulfis both on the stick as well as cut into pieces, take your pick. We absolutely devoured their rich malai kulfi and the guava variety served with rock salt and chilli sprinkled on top.

Kulfiwala

If you are a KC Das fan, then you would have surely visited their outlet on Moores Road. Kulfiwala has set shop right next to it. It features a variety of flavours made by three generations of kulfi makers from Bombay. At the last count they had more than 30 options to choose from. Try out choco chip, seetaphal, roasted almond, apricot and butterscotch; they are the most popular flavours. They also serve a pink colour guava kulfi, a high-selling variety flying off their shelves.

Tewary’s Kulfi

This is the oldest kulfi shop in town (came up around 1980) and was there much before the new brands hijacked the market. Located in the plush Nungambakkam area, kulfi from Tewary’s is a hot property. All the 23 varieties of kulfis are churned in-house and among the most popular ones are the traditional malai and kesar. But to keep up with the times, they have introduced flavours like coffee and blueberry. One thing we loved about Tewary’s kulfis is that they are not overwhelmingly sweet and thus, do not saturate your palate.

Kulfi Zone

This place started as a small kiosk a while back but owing to massive footfall the owner moved to a large space on Radhakrishna Salai. The store has matka and stick varieties, of which the sticks are more popular. Although Kulfi Zone has been there for a decade, they moved to the new space only last year and are now much more prominently located. We hear that owing to high demand, kulfis are made in more than two batches daily. Gulkand and mango varieties are top sellers and a decent number of people swear by the chickoo variety as well.

Dojo Kulfi

The kulfi from Dojo if tasty and value for money. It was set up seven years ago in Mylapore by the husband-wife duo Lakshmi and Jayachandran, who love their desserts. They had realised early that there is tremendous scope for kulfi outlets since earlier the few options that were available were only in push-carts. They have a factory in Ennore (and also a store), where the kulfis are made fresh and sent to Mylapore. Initially they sold only flavours like malai and kesar and pista, now they have flavours like chocolate and strawberry as well. Dojo gets a lot of bulk orders for weddings and parties as well.
