n Gurugram, Azure Hospitality, the popular hospitality chain behind Mamagoto carried out a new brand extension to its flagship brand Mamagoto, a few years ago. A cousin to Mamagoto, Mr. Mamagoto is an Asian brasserie in the foodie haven, DLF Cyber Hub, Gurugram. With classic interiors and a new graphic language inspired from vintage Asia, Mr. Mamagoto retains its namesake’s quirk but gives it an edge – or as they like to call it, ‘sophisticated goofiness’. The menu includes modern Asian Hawker and fusion Asian cuisines along with other advanced Asian small & large plates.

Now Chennaiites get to savour the best from Mr. Mamagoto’s menu card at the Khader Nawaz Khan outlet as a part of their pop-up menu. This week we tried some of the best items from the menu and were quite smitten by it.

From the small plate section, we tried out the Shrimp & Wasabi Cream. It was absolutely sensational in taste and texture. The prawns were sautéed with caramelized onions, Himalayan salt, a seven-spice powder and served on a bed of wasabi cream along with some crisp bread. As we scooped the prawns dipped in the cream with the bread, the myriad flavours and textures simply blew our breadth away. It is novel and delightful. For my vegetarian partner-in-crime, they specially created a crispy lotus stem dish with curry leaves and I was informed, it was quite delicious.

The pop-up has two delicious Bao varieties – one vegetarian with chickpeas and mushroom with truffle oil and a non-vegetarian one with Hoisin chicken. The soft bread and the generous filling is quite a combination and of course it helps, that both the fillings were quite delectable.

We got to try quite a few items from the Large Plates section. First, there was a Sweet Potato and Oyster Mushroom Skewer served on a bed of pistachio paste along with charred green chillies from the Robata grill. We have to admit, we haven’t had a vegetarian dish that is so intriguing in the recent times. The sweetness of the potato, meatiness of the mushroom, richness of pistachio cream and the spicy punch from green chilly played a whole medley on our palates. It was blissful, to say the least.

We also savoured the Katsu chicken which is served with Soba Noodles and a traditional-soya based sauce. If deep-fried, Panko-crusted meat is your thing, you will surely love this extremely filling dish. But my favourite was the Miso Glazed Salmon, that was served with sautéed snow peas, pink ginger and edamame. An absolutely sophisticated and bold dish, that has a Masterchef-ly quality.

And if you are craving for curries, do give a shot to their Indonesian Rendang lamb curry with dipping parathas. The curry is delicious, full of flavours and soulful. I almost forgot to dip the parathas into them! This combination is a clear winner.

They also have a special Mocktail section in the pop up menu and we downed our delicious dinner with some Summer Quench, a refreshing drink prepared with mango, carrot and orange juice.
