While travelling through Mount Road, you would have often spotted a red-brick building bang opposite the popular Spencer Plaza, that looks like a remnant of city’s rich colonial past. It has often piqued my interest as I am sure it has for many others. The name ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’ only added to my curiosity. I finally decided to step in and check out the shop recently.

The Old Curiosity Shop was once called Kashmiri Art Palace and it was started by Lateef Mohammed’s father, Ghulam Mohammad almost seven decades ago. At that point in time, the primary clientele were the Britishers. They were so amazed with the antiques at this shop and started calling it ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’ just like the one in London. The name stuck on. Lateef Mohammad inherited his father’s love for collecting artefacts from around the world and took over the shop in the 1980’s.

This shop is now managed  by Lateef Mohammed, who loves collecting antiques. He believes the most precious antiques are the ones with great stories. Most of these stories are left behind by our ancestors and have the potential of getting passed on to next generation through the antiques.

The Old Curiosity Shop, London

As you enter the premises you will notice that it is filled with priceless antiques from all over the world which includes vintage cameras, old posters, imprinted plates, badges, typewriters, post cards, expensive lamps used by the royals, pocket watches, jewellery boxes, vintage hair accessories, ashtrays, photographs, old comics, clocks and so much more. Once you start talking to Lateef Mohammed, you would realise, each of them has an interesting story behind it. It is fascinating to hear those stories. You would probably look at the object with a different perspective altogether.

The place also has a range of bronze figurines from different eras, beautiful carpets, huge gramophone and original photos of Jawaharlal Nehru among other things.

Not all artefacts are up for sale and many of them are just meant for display. However, the shop also creates replicas of antiques. Theymake objects like jewellery boxes, naval compasses and a lot more. These are a huge hit with customers and are affordable.

Go find yourself lost in this amazing antique shop. You might find a perfect gift for your loved ones.
