Asian street food has clearly caught the fancy of restauranteurs and foodies in Chennai. They seem to be the flavor of the season. Joining the likes of Va Pho, Nasi and Mee and Mamagoto is another fabulous new Asian place – Soy Soi. The place brings in dishes from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Burma. The interiors of the place are simple yet elegant.

It is the latest offering of Japtej Ahluwalia and Nikesh Lamba of Double Roti fame and the kitchen is helmed by Chef Peter Tseng, who has had an earlier stint with Lotus at The Park and Chap Chay at Raintree hotel.

The Jackfruit Bao prepared for vegetarians has already become the talk of the town. Similarly, the Pulled Duck and Pork Belly baos have earned rave reviews from non-vegetarians. If you love dimsums, then do try the Prawn and Scallop Suimai (it’s an open dimsum but tastes heavenly). The Crystal Vegtable dumplings with their perfectly translucent covering has been recommended by veggie brigade. The Malay Chicken Curry Puffs and Murtabak, Thai Chilly Glazed Baby Back Ribs, Goi Cuon (Vietnamese vegetarian rice paper rolls), Ikan Otak Otak Goreng (Indonesian Fish Cakes), Vietnamese Pho and the the Seafood Laksa are our personal recommendations.

Soy Soi also serves hearty soups and refreshing salads for all those who wish to keep it light.

And do not leave the place without trying out their desserts. For an Asian place, they offer quite a variety. Thai Jellied Water Chestnut, Tender Coconut and Basil Pannacotta, Butterscotch and Nougat Ice-Cream and the chef recommended Khao Niew Mamuang (sticky rice based dessert) are some of their most popular choices.

Plan your next family dinner at Soy Soi. You will love it!
