The last weekend saw some of the brightest young minds in fashion come together to showcase their collection at the Naturals Madras Couture Fashion Week 2017 held at Westin Hotel in Velachery, that was organised by Jupiter Events in association with Arcadio. The event was choreographed by Priya Manikandan and styled by Prajanya Anand. This year saw the participation of over 13 designers, from new to accomplished ones. Every year, the show has an element of social consciousness in its repertoire. This year, they had a line dedicated to the differently-abled.
Shalini Visakhan, under the label Suvastra Designs, presented adaptive clothing in the popular fashion week. It had differently-abled and able-bodied people walking the ramp together. About 10 models on the wheelchair alongwith Mr India Wheelchair 2015 Gulfam Ahmed, who was the showstopper and 11 other models with Miss South India, Bavithra, as the showstopper. Her line includes shirts with a velcro for people, who have muscular problems.
Among the debut designers, works of Sashirekha Kumar and Monica Jain that focused on cherry red, turquoise blue, gold and silver, representing the transition between day and night; Deepika Raja and Madhumitha Nataraj featuring Oriental details in the necklines and sleeves in an azure blue-dominated palette and Komal Murthy and Mona Sundaram’s collection featuring figure-flattering Indian and Western silhouettes printed in astronomy-inspired motifs in a colour palette dominated by pinks and yellows on black stood out. We also loved Gibbaci’s footwear collection.
The fashion week also had sections devoted to fusion wear, contemporary bridal and reinventing saris among others.
