After your latest trip to Malaysia, you have been getting these sudden cravings for some authentic Malay food. Fret not! The city has an authentic Malaysian eatery right at the heart of the city. Established in 1995, Nasi Kandar Pelita first opened for business as a stall selling Nasi Kandar at a corner coffee shop at Taman Chai Leng, Perai, Penang. In a short time, word spread and sometime later the restaurant was able to buy the coffee shop. Since then, Nasi Kandar Pelita has grown to become Malaysia’s largest Nasi Kandar restaurant chain and has only one branch in the country and that is in namma Chennai.
Nasi kandar, an Indian Muslim dish, can be traced to the very streets of colonial Malaysia where nasi is Malay for rice and kandar is Malay for yoke. Amidst the proud houses and bustle of life, a hawker bearing baskets of food and rice hanging from a yoke across his shoulder would pass by. Tantalising aromas of fragrant curries, vegetables, fried fish, beef and chicken would precede his arrival as he went from house to house, hawking his fare. This became Malaysia’s most popular street food and Pelita serves delicious variety of Nasi kandar.
The men behind Pelita Nasi Kandar are two family friends, Kirudu Muhamed Bin Kuppaikanni and Kaliq Jamal. Prominently located at T Nagar, Pelita Nasi Kandar serves dishes like Sambal Udang, Burung Puyuh, Kari Ikan, Ketam Masala, Nasi Biriyani Ayam and much more.
