On Sunday, March 4, get set to Discover Paddleboarding as a sport from a certified specialist and Limca book record holder, Kumaran Mahalingam who has been actively promoting the sport and water conservation among Chennaiites,at a special event.

Paddleboarding is a water sport which involves propelling a surfboard with paddle while kneeling or standing. Stand up Paddle boarding started off in Hawaii few decades back, where the surf instructor would stand up on a paddle board and instruct his students. Slowly with the use of a paddle, this sport became a fun way to explore the sea and has become the preferred crossover water sports activity in the world.

At this special event, discover how soon paddle boarding can go from a laid-back activity to an active adventure sport. In addition, you get to learn about conservation of water bodies. The 75-minute session will start at 6 am and be held at Lake Sakthi (a name given by Kumaran to conceal the real identity so that the place doesn’t get too congested). All participants need to register in advance and meet at Ponmar bus stop. At this session, you will get to learn balance and different strokes, board handling and control, knee paddling, board maneuvers, stand up methodology and nature watch. The fees charged for the session is INR 750 and this includes gear and equipments required for the session.One need not know swimming to learn paddleboarding.

With poor waste management and changing lifestyle, vast number of water bodies in and around Chennai constantly being converted into garbage dump zones. By promoting paddleboarding as a sport and highlighting the importance of water bodies in his sessions, Kumaran Mahalingam is also doing his bit in water body conservation.
